5 simple ways to overhaul your mind

-

Before you try to declutter, you need to change the way you think. Here’s how:

1 TRANSFER THE GUILT

‘Instead of feeling guilty for letting go of stuff, feel guilty for not letting it go,’ Gill says. ‘When you keep something you don’t need, use or like, you’re withholding it from someone who could need it.’

2 SEPARATE FEELINGS FROM THINGS

It’s okay to hold on to some things for sentimental reasons, but be mindful about your choices. ‘Holding on to so many things because they remind you of the past prevents you from living in the present and looking towards the future,’ Gill says.

3 FOCUS ON THE BENEFITS

You’ll have less to tidy and clear away, which means more time in the long-run to put your feet up. Plus:

● You’ll always be able to find the things you need.

● You’ll only have things you use and like – no more wading through rubbish!

● You could make money from selling your unwanted items – on sites like ebay, Shpock or Gumtree.

4 ASK YOURSELF KEY QUESTIONS

If you’re not sure whether to get rid of something, ask yourself the below. If the answer to all is ‘no’, chuck it!

● Does it make me happy?

● Is it useful?

● If I saw it in a shop, would I buy it again today?

5 DON’T PANIC

‘People have this fear of getting rid of stuff, even when they can’t identify why,’ Vicky says. ‘Think, “What’s the worst that can happen?” Most things can be replaced. Remind yourself that and you’ll be fine!’
