French photographer and cinematographer of Romanian origin, Eli Lotar arrived in France in 1924. His work was published in many of the avant-garde publications of the day, and featured in several major international photography exhibitions. An active member of the Association of Revolutionary Writers and Artists in his role as head of the photography department, Lotar was a politically active artist and his work is a testament to the audacity, innovation and socio-political activism that characterised the interwar period.
