GODSTICKS FACE THE RAGE ON LATEST CD
Welsh band reconnect with Bruce Soord for their “dark” fourth album.
Godsticks’ frontman Darran Charles describes Faced With Rage as “a lot darker” than their band’s previous releases. The album, out via Kscope on October 13, is also the first one they’ve recorded as a four-piece, with new drummer Tom Price and guitarist Gavin Bushell.
“[2015 album] Emergence was a statement of intent, but for this album, I wanted to retain the heaviness and explore other shades,” says Charles. “Our songs have always been quite short and snappy but I’ve let them develop a little bit more on this one. There’s even an eight-minute song on there called Everdrive, which is unheard of for me. I didn’t think I’d be capable of writing something that long. Lyrically, it’s about emotional conflict and people who’ve resolved to change their behaviour. Maybe it’s a bit autobiographical, who knows!”
The album includes guest appearances from two members of The Pineapple Thief – a band Charles has recently been playing guitar with. Bassist Jon Sykes contributes backing vocals to the elongated Everdrive, while frontman Bruce Soord plays synths on Guilt and Revere.
“Guilt took about 14 months to write and probably went through about 13 different versions before it ended up as the album opener,” Charles says. “I’d trashed it about four times and sent it to the bin, then resurrected it four times, but I really liked the intro and I thought it had something to offer.”
