BREAKING THE SPELL OF LONELINESS FELLSIDE, OUT NOW Campaigning journo and Scottish folkie join forces, make record.

The marriage between journalist Monbiot and folk singer McLennan is surprisingly convenient, the latter delivering the former’s ruminations on loneliness, along with a version of We Shall Overcome and his own family saga, My Time And Yours. Aside from the overly sentimental Reclaim The Street, Monbiot shelves his crankier notions – he’s at his best on The Night Desk’s tale of a small-hours police station, which succeeds by being unusually non-judgemental. Throughout, McLennan’s warmth leavens the spartan backdrops and gloomy arrangements. A brave idea with moments of real uplift. JOHN AIZLEWOOD
