THIS GIRL’S IN LOVE: A BACHARACH & DAVID SONGBOOK EAST WEST, OUT NOW A tribute to Burt and Hal. Why has nobody thought of this before?

There’s a slightly awkward aspect to the fragile Rumer marrying Burt Bacharach’s musical director Rob Shirakbari and adding to the seemingly endless list of Bacharach/ David tribute albums, especially since their first collaboration, the self-written Into Colour was such a return to form. Much as Shirakbari’s expansive arrangements provide a lush backdrop, Rumer’s take is downbeat throughout, whether infusing (They Long To Be) Close To You with quiet jealousy; adding a sense of menace to You’ll Never Get To Heaven (If You Break My Heart) or hinting that The Look Of Love’s narrator is a stalker. Draining and stylish in equal measure. JOHN AIZLEWOOD
