Thank you, Q, for your Johnny Marr special in the last is­sue [ Q366]. When he claims, “I don’t think any­one’s ever had such a hard time for such a long time about the end of a band as I have, be­sides Yoko Ono”, he’s prob­a­bly right. Yet while it’s in­ter­est­ing to spec­u­late where The Smiths might’ve gone mu­si­cally af­ter the in­cred­i­ble Strange­ways…, I doubt they’d ever have bet­tered it. As Marr him­self ad­mits: “My mo­tive for mov­ing on is more run­ning to­wards some­thing than run­ning away from some­thing.” And it’s that ad­ven­tur­ous spirit which makes him still in­ter­est­ing and is prob­a­bly why he runs 20 miles ev­ery day!
