FROM THE WINNER’S PODIUM:

Suggs: “The first time I met [ Ranking] Roger was on the doorsteps of the Roundhouse in 1979 when the bus pulled up to go on the 2 Tone tour. It was us, The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat and a little later, Dexys Midnight Runners. I was one of the last ones to get there; there were arms and legs, trumpets and trombones, spliff-puffing faces sticking out of the little sliding windows. Forty-five people on a bus. A couple of revs of the clapped-out diesel engine and we’re heading up Chalk Farm to the North. We got as far as the Watford Gap, and a small riot broke out and all the black people on the bus got arrested. I won’t go on any further. We come from round here so this means a lot.”
