NEW FACTS EMERGE CHERRY RED, OUT NOW That’s 32 Fall albums and counting…
“We need more sackings,” growls Mark E Smith during Couples Vs Jobless Mid 30s here. Smith, of course, is as famous for firing band members as for The Fall’s music. The BBC may have pronounced him dead in March (they meant to say “Happy 60th birthday”), but this post-punk firebrand is still challenging perceptions on HR – indeed, his third wife Elena Poulou has now left the band. Couples… breaks new ground, however, picking up the proto-deconstructivist thread of, say, 1982’ s Marquis Cha-Cha for a full-tilt Sun Ra-ish improv marathon. Throw in sneery sorties into country-rock (Groundsboy) and Sarah Records-style tweeness (Gibbus Gibson), and this one’s a colourful addition to Smith’s rambling canon.
