“We need more sack­ings,” growls Mark E Smith dur­ing Cou­ples Vs Job­less Mid 30s here. Smith, of course, is as fa­mous for fir­ing band mem­bers as for The Fall’s mu­sic. The BBC may have pro­nounced him dead in March (they meant to say “Happy 60th birth­day”), but this post-punk fire­brand is still chal­leng­ing per­cep­tions on HR – in­deed, his third wife Elena Poulou has now left the band. Cou­ples… breaks new ground, how­ever, pick­ing up the proto-de­con­struc­tivist thread of, say, 1982’ s Mar­quis Cha-Cha for a full-tilt Sun Ra-ish im­prov marathon. Throw in sneery sor­ties into coun­try-rock (Grounds­boy) and Sarah Records-style twee­ness (Gib­bus Gib­son), and this one’s a colour­ful ad­di­tion to Smith’s rambling canon.
