THE DUKE SPIRI SPIRIT

Gothy art-rockers’ lively fifth.

Q (UK) - - Q Review New Albums -

Having toiled for precious little reward over 14 years and four albums, less hardy souls than The Duke Spirit might have been tempted to put themselves out of their misery. Instead, they’ve re-trenched, ditched the stodge and emerged with their sharpest, bravest album to date. Magenta clatters like an arena anthem in waiting; Bones Of Proof evolves from tender All About Eve-style ballad to fearsome swirl and Liela Moss does a passable Stevie Nicks turn on See Power. They’re better still when they really stretch themselves on the catchy How Could, How Come and the blistering YoYo, which gathers together all that’s good about a band surprisingly peaking. At the very point they had nothing to lose, The Duke Spirit have gained much. JOHN AIZLEWOOD Listen To: How Could, How Come | YoYo | Magenta | See Power
