Essex herbert’s inspired take on Brexit Britain.

Chelmsford Wetherspoons isn’t an obvious stepping stone to pop success. However, former employee Jordan Cardy (aka Rat Boy) is well on the way – he’s already been sampled by rap royalty Kendrick Lamar. The 21- year-old’s eclectic debut oozes attitude, his pithy social commentary binding together sonic excursions into breezy funk-punk (Get Over It), poundshop hip-hop (Move) and indie tearjerkers (I’ll Be Waiting). Local alumni Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon both contribute – on Turn Round M8 and Laidback, respectively – and Cardy travels the same roads as nightbus laureates from Alex Turner to Jamie T throughout. But his voice has an authenticity all of its own – he’s headed for the (lager) top. HHHH
