WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR

PROUD DISTURBER OF THE PEACE

Q (UK) - - Q Review New Albums - ANDY FYFE

LOOSE, OUT 4 AUGUST Cornwall-based singer-songwriter returns as an Americana trio.

In 2012 Ruarri Joseph released his fourth solo album and promptly disappeared. But he’s not been idle, slowly reincarnating himself as leader of William The Conqueror. The trio’s debut is a very modern take on Americana, as much lo-fi grunge as it is country. Though these songs are forged from a turbulent childhood and the loss of close friends and relatives, Proud Disturber… carries itself upbeat and unbowed, whether skiffling along Did You Wrong, rampaging through In My Dreams or being reflectively defiant on Pedestals. The first part of a trilogy still mostly held in Joseph’s head, it’s a mighty launchpad for what’s yet to come.
