SUPER S FURRY ANIMALS

Q (UK) - - Q Review Reissues - CHRIS CATCHPOLE

Welsh oddballs’ second LP gets deluxe treatment. For all Super Furry Animals’ gonzo image, listening back to their second album 20 years on, what strikes you is how relentlessly tuneful it all is. Lyrics about service station pies and vampires keep their wilfully idiosyncratic strangeness ever-present, but it’s the lush textures and melodies – inspired by post-Pet Sounds Beach Boys and ELO – that make it such a satisfying listen. For anyone who wants to go further out-there though, there’s an eight-minute techno version of The Smiths’ The Boy With The Thorn In His Side in the whopping 30 tracks of bonus material.
