JIM JAMES

TRIBUTE TO 2 ATO, OUT NOW

Q (UK) - - Q Review -

My Morning Jacket leader’s covers album. Jim James’s original Tribute To… was a 2009 acoustic EP of George Harrison and Beatles tracks. In contrast, the 11 tracks on Vol 2 are full-blooded – and fully orchestrated – where needed. The early wonder of The Beach Boys’ I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times mashed up with the rhythm and horns from Isaac Hayes’s By The Time I Get To Phoenix isn’t sustained, however. Crying In The Chapel and Funny How Times Slips Away (The Orioles and Willie Nelson respectively) are hushed acoustic strums, ’ 30s pop tune Love Is The Sweetest Thing is heavy on its music hall origins, while James goes the full Hank Williams for Bob Dylan’s I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight. Curious rather than essential. ANDY FYFE Listen To: I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times | Wild Honey
