A former breakdancer who grew up on Manchester’s Moss Side, Gerald Simpson (pictured below) had started producing electro beats as a teenager, eventually forming the group 808 State (named for Roland’s TB- 808 drum machine) with fellow hip-hop fans Graham Massey and Martin Price, who worked at Eastern Bloc records in the city centre. Together the trio recorded Newbuild, one of the first UK acid house EPs worthy of comparison with those coming from America. But it was the solo single Simpson released as A Guy Called Gerald that made the bigger impact. Released in the summer of 1988, tribal acid groover Voodoo Ray went on to reach Number 12 in the singles chart and remains a landmark in the evolution of UK dance music.
