Early acid house par­ties at­tracted a rip­ple of me­dia in­ter­est, which fo­cused largely on pun­ters’ cu­ri­ous fash­ion choices: “smiley” T-shirts, ban­dan­nas, baggy jeans. But as rave went na­tional in the sum­mer of 1988, all the el­e­ments for a full-scale moral panic were in place, cul­mi­nat­ing in The Sun’s in­fa­mous 19 Oc­to­ber scare story head­lined “Evil of Ec­stasy”. As al­ways, though, dou­ble stan­dards ap­plied. Only the week be­fore, the same pa­per had of­fered read­ers the chance to buy a “groovy and cool” acid house T-shirt en­dorsed by gos­sip col­umn Bizarre.
