With mainstream radio slow to broadcast acid house, it was left to pirate stations to plug the gap. Centreforce began broadcasting from East London in May 1989 and played house music 24/7 – alongside shout-outs to the expanding rave massive: “Are you ready, London? Let’s go mental!” Not only were the pirates a source for new music and information on upcoming raves, they also showcased fresh DJ talent, not least future jungle dons Fabio and Grooverider, who started out playing acid house on Phase 1 in South London.
