GENERATION RX MDDN/BMG, OUT 14 SEPTEMBER

US pop-punks wear their hearts of darkness on their sleeves.

Good Charlotte’s 20- year journey has seen them morph from punk rock street rats to unlikely members of the TMZ celebrity set – guitarist Benji Madden is married to Cameron Diaz while vocalist and twin brother Joel’s other half is socialite Nicole Richie. If Generation Rx is anything to go by, the Beverly Hills lifestyle is no bed of roses. The album’s title is a nod to America’s addiction to prescription drugs, while the 21st- century pop production gloss of Actual Pain, for example, hides an inner turmoil. “Alone inside, I wish I could die,” cries Madden on the deceptively upbeat Shadowboxer, suggesting it’s more than just gilded-cage angst. Despite it all, you can’t help but feel for him. ★★★ DAVE EVERLEY
