MATT BERRY

Q (UK) - - Review -

Bizarre, but surprisingly good TV tunes cover album. In parallel to his career as a comedian, Matt Berry has released five albums of retro-flavoured, prog-tinged original music. His latest is something of a niche proposition: 14 cover versions of the themes to ’ 70s and ’ 80s TV shows. It’s an eccentric move, but one seemingly played with a straight face. Given the nature of the project, it’s sometimes hard to do the same, but more often, the fun is in what Berry does with the source material. Plucking out a Serge Gainbourg-like groove from The Liver Birds theme, finding the inner Pink Floyd wig-out in World In Action and transforming the title tune to Sorry! into a dubbed-out reggae skank. God knows what possessed him to do it, but Television Themes is entertaining on every count. CHRIS CATCHPOLE Listen To: Sorry | World In Action
