KING OF COWARDS ROCKET, OUT 28 SEPTEMBER

Q (UK) - - Review -

Adventures in extreme heaviness from porcine Geordies. As uncompromising as their name suggests, this Newcastle five-piece’s 2017 debut featured two sprawling exercises in heavy psych that each clocked in at more than 15 minutes. No doubt the accusations of sell-out will be flying with this follow-up and its sharper songs, yet the more focused approach suits them. It’s unlikely to make the Middlesbrough-Workington road as iconic as Route 66, but A66 is made thrilling by the gear change midway through, ditching its Sabbath crawl for a brutal climax. Nothing else quite succeeds in cutting through the downtuned murk, although riffs are uniformly monolithic and frontman Matt Baty’s throaty bark is never less than entertaining. ★★★ PHIL MONGREDIEN Listen To: A66 | Cake Of Light
