RAIB investigates Barrow bridge collapse

Rail (UK) - - Network News -

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) is investigating the construction, maintenance and events leading up to the partial collapse of a bridge over the Midland Main Line at Barrow upon Soar on August 1 ( RAIL 807).

Its initial findings suggest that drilling for soil samples was taking place in order to assess the structure’s condition. Network Rail had been monitoring these defects for ‘some years’, according to RAIB.

Shortly after drilling started cracks appeared in the footpath, and then part of the adjacent wall, footpath and drilling rig fell onto the railway. Services were suspended until August 3 as a result.
