New Crossrail platform opens at Abbey Wood
The new Kent-bound platform at Abbey Wood, constructed as part of the Crossrail project, opened on August 22.
Its opening marks completion of the work to reconstruct tracks and platforms used by Southeastern at the station. They needed to be realigned and rebuilt to make space for new Crossrail tracks and platforms.
Network Rail installed 4.5 kilometres (2.7 miles) of new track, while the new Londonbound platform was opened in February.
Focus now turns to constructing Crossrail’s track and platforms. This will be complete at the end of next year, ahead of Elizabeth Line (EL) services beginning in 2018.
When EL trains begin running to Abbey Wood, there will be an additional 12 trains per hour into London from the station.
A Southeastern Class 465 stands at the new Abbey Wood platform on August 22, the first day it was open.
