Test­ing be­gins on Cross­rail Aven­tras

The first Cross­rail Class 345 Aven­tra was due to be taken to Old Dalby to be­gin test­ing as this is­sue of RAIL went to press.

The seven-car elec­tric mul­ti­ple unit (345001) will un­dergo months of test­ing be­fore tests on the na­tional net­work be­gin ( RAIL 807). It has been built by Bom­bardier at Derby Litchurch Lane.

The Class 345s be­gin en­ter­ing traf­fic in May 2017 be­tween Lon­don Liver­pool Street and Shen­field. The first 16 trains of the 66-train or­der will be de­liv­ered as seven-car trains, but they will even­tu­ally all be nine-car EMUs, with the re­main­ing Mo­tor Stan­dard Open ve­hi­cles in­serted into 345001-345016 af­ter de­liv­ery of the fi­nal nine-car trains.
