Freight service via Atherton suspended

Rail (UK) - - Network News - DAVID CLOUGH.

The route between Crow Nest Junction (near Wigan) and Brindle Heath Junction (Salford) via Atherton has not had a regular freight service since the 1960s. Freight traffic and diverted passenger services have previously been routed via Bolton instead. But DB Cargo has now started a new flow taking refuse from Merseyside to the North East. The train is loaded at Knowsley Freight Terminal and unloaded at Wilton on Teesside. The train is booked to run Monday to Friday, but after operating during July it has been suspended, reputedly because of terminal handling issues. On July 19, DB 66199 rolls through Atherton with the Wilton-Knowsley refuse train.
