Bedale: The three- mile by­pass that twice crosses the Wens­ley­dale Rail­way was of­fi­cially opened on Au­gust 9.

Billing­ham: Three thou­sand peo­ple have signed a pe­ti­tion to save the 1904 North Eastern Rail­way sig­nal box from de­mo­li­tion. The tall build­ing is due to be re­placed at the end of 2017, when con­trol of the level cross­ing is trans­ferred to York. Blay­don: Users of the Tyne & Wear Metro station from the bus station and town centre face a lengthy di­ver­sion for some weeks, while ma­jor struc­tural re­pairs are car­ried out to the foot­bridge over the busy A695 trunk road. The bridge was struck by a lorry on Au­gust 4. New­cas­tle: Plans have been drawn up for a new south­ern en­trance to Cen­tral station in the Stephen­son Quar­ter, to be con­structed in 2018. New­cas­tle: The £ 6 mil­lion ren­o­va­tion of the city’s Cen­tral Station Metro, sched­uled to be com­pleted in Au­gust, will carry on un­til Novem­ber be­cause of the un­ex­pect­edly poor con­di­tion of the walls. No ser­vices will call af­ter 2000 on Sun­day to Thurs­day, and there will be some week­end clo­sures to­wards the end of the pro­gramme. Sun­der­land: An ex­ten­sion of the Tyne & Wear Metro has been pro­posed, to reach the Dox­ford Park em­ploy­ment area.
