The Great Cen­tral main line from Lon­don Maryle­bone to Sh­effield closed as a through route on Septem­ber 5 1966, 50 years ago this month. Sec­tions that lost their pas­sen­ger ser­vices were Ayles­bury- Rugby Cen­tral, Ban­bury- Wood­ford Halse and Not­ting­ham Vic­to­ria- Sh­effield Vic­to­ria. Other clo­sures that month were: Septem­ber 5: Pas­sen­ger - Southamp­ton Cen­tral-Southamp­ton Ter­mi­nus. Freight - Calvert- Rugby, Ashen­don- Duck­man­ton, Bul­well- An­nes­ley, Kirkby-Sut­ton- in- Ash­field. Septem­ber 12: Pas­sen­ger - Sax­mund­ham- Alde­burgh, Sh­effield ( Wood­burn Junc­tion) - Ald­warke North Junc­tion. Freight - Sizewell- Alde­burgh. Septem­ber 19: Freight - Crox­ley Green- Colne. Septem­ber 26: Freight - Kil­ma­colm- Greenock.
