The Great Central main line from London Marylebone to Sheffield closed as a through route on September 5 1966, 50 years ago this month. Sections that lost their passenger services were Aylesbury- Rugby Central, Banbury- Woodford Halse and Nottingham Victoria- Sheffield Victoria. Other closures that month were: September 5: Passenger - Southampton Central-Southampton Terminus. Freight - Calvert- Rugby, Ashendon- Duckmanton, Bulwell- Annesley, Kirkby-Sutton- in- Ashfield. September 12: Passenger - Saxmundham- Aldeburgh, Sheffield ( Woodburn Junction) - Aldwarke North Junction. Freight - Sizewell- Aldeburgh. September 19: Freight - Croxley Green- Colne. September 26: Freight - Kilmacolm- Greenock.
