Cambridge North station to open on May 21
Greater Anglia confirmed on April 25 that the new Cambridge North station would open on May 21. As this issue of RAIL went to press, Network Rail was completing construction before handing it over to GA, which will manage the facility.
The three-platform station will be served by GA trains running to Cambridge, Norwich and London Liverpool Street. Initially four trains per hour (two in each direction) will call at the station (one in each direction to/from London and one in each direction to/from Norwich).
Trains to Stansted Airport will run direct from 2019 when the Norwich-Cambridge service is extended to the airport.
Govia Thameslink Railway’s Great Northern trains will also serve the station, with 2tph running to/from London King’s Cross (one starting at the station) and one a new fast train on a new Ely to London King’s Cross service (off-peak).
The station features a 1,000space cycle park and a car park for 450 cars, and is served by the Cambridge guided bus and local buses.
There are three ticket machines, a coffee shop and other retail outlets. Airport-style waiting rooms have also been built.
