Con­verted coal hop­pers to serve GBRf/Tar­mac deal

Forty-nine coal hop­pers have been con­verted into ag­gre­gates wag­ons for GB Rail­freight (GBRf) to serve a con­tract with Tar­mac.

The work in­volved re­mov­ing the mid­dle sec­tion from the ve­hi­cles to make them the ap­pro­pri­ate length for ag­gre­gates use, while at the same time re­tain­ing their 102-tonne max­i­mum gross laden weight.

An ini­tial rake of 24 con­verted wag­ons is op­er­a­tional from Tar­mac’s Ar­cow Quarry, run­ning to Bred­bury, Age­croft and Leeds. A sec­ond set of 25 has been re­leased, and these will be used on fur­ther ser­vices from Ar­cow, as well as those from Swinden Quarry. GBRf is one year into a five-year deal with Tar­mac.
