The RMT union has appealed directly to drivers belonging to ASLEF to defy their own union’s advice and vote against the deal.

RMT South East Regional Organiser Paul Cox told the BBC: “It looks like this offer is a bribe, and the RMT has consistently refused bribes. It does nothing for safety and there’s nothing new on the table.

“We hope all the drivers on Southern who are being balloted will see it for what it is - a sham. I am appealing to all the drivers to reject it.

“Drivers are being bribed to reject a safety principle. They have been loyal to the cause; it’s the officials of another union that have let them down.”
