GTR discussing facilities upgrades
Govia Thameslink Railway is assisting with the modifications required at Bedford Cauldwell depot to house longer trains, and is talking to Abellio and Network Rail regarding stabling space at Cambridge.
The National Audit Office report into Thameslink, released on November 23 ( RAIL 841), highlighted the increase in budget from £16 million to £29m that was needed for the facilities.
GTR Engineering Director Gerry McFadden told RAIL: “We are building Bedford depot. We were commissioned to do so as it is an eight-car depot and we need a 12-car facility. It needs CET [Controlled Emission Toilet] and servicing facilities for 12-car sets.”
McFadden said more work was needed at Cambridge, where GTR trains will go into the existing depot currently used by Greater Anglia: “We have discussed with Abellio about that. We need another siding and have spoken with Network Rail about the land.”
A third location in Kent is also being investigated. McFadden was unable to confirm the location, but RAIL understands it will be the former works at Ashford. That will be used from 2021, with ‘700s’ serviced in facilities currently used by Southeastern. The new Southeastern franchise will move into the new facilities being planned for the former works.
