WALES
Ebbw Vale: The reinstatement of passenger services to Cardiff in 2008 has had the desired effect on
economic growth, job creation, car reduction, and reduction in air pollution, according to a European study. Despite this success, there seems little prospect of six miles of redoubling, owing to a lack of funding.
Maespoeth: The Corris Railway is to build a halfmile extension south of its headquarters station to Coedwig South by 2020, doubling the system’s length. The intention is to eventually reach Tan y Coed, giving a total ride of 3½ miles.
Newtown: Four miles of the Cambrian line to Aberystwyth is being relaid with continuous welded rail, at a cost of £ 7.25 million.
Penhelig: The Cambrian Coast Line station is expected to reopen on March 31, after a threemonth rebuild. The wooden platform is being replaced by a synthetic version, and new lighting is being installed.
