West Country conversions
The Class 391 to ‘769’ conversion project needs to be followed up by converting other classes. Electric units with added diesel engines would make an ideal replacement for the Class 159s used on the Waterloo-Exeter service, as part of this route is already third rail.
The extra rolling stock would make possible here in the west of England (for example) services that are not currently offered.
Bristol Temple Meads to Taunton via Westbury.
Taunton to Yeovil Junction via Castle Cary. Taunton to Barnstaple via Exeter. Taunton to Salisbury via Westbury.
Taunton to Bournemouth via Westbury and Southampton.
Bristol to Bournemouth via Westbury and Southampton.
Plymouth to Waybridge via Bodmin.
And, of course, the inland reopened route from Exeter to Plymouth via Okehampton.
