Net­work Rail warns of Brighton Main Line clo­sures

Net­work Rail has re­minded pas­sen­gers that the Brighton Main Line will be closed be­tween Three Bridges and Brighton and be­tween Three Bridges and Lewes on week­ends through­out Novem­ber, in the lat­est part of the £67 mil­lion up­grade of the route.

The next clo­sures take place on week­ends be­gin­ning Novem­ber 3, 10 and 24/25. The work in­volves re­new­ing more track in­side Clay­ton Tun­nel, in­stal­la­tion of new sig­nals be­tween Patcham and Pre­ston Park, and re­place­ment of elec­tri­cal cir­cuits be­tween Three Bridges and Bal­combe.

Work al­ready un­der­taken in­cludes re­newal of 2.7 miles of con­duc­tor rail, 532 yards of track, re­place­ment of 15 sig­nal heads, and re­place­ment of thou­sands of tonnes of bal­last.

Fur­ther clo­sures are due to take place on Jan­uary 6, Feb­ru­ary 9/10, and be­tween Feb­ru­ary 16 and Feb­ru­ary 24 (in the tra­di­tion­ally qui­eter school half-term week), fol­lowed by week­end clo­sures be­gin­ning on March 2/23/30, April 6 and a fi­nal one-day clo­sure on May 5. They fol­low a se­ries of week­end clo­sures in Oc­to­ber.

Net­work Rail says that when com­pleted, re­li­a­bil­ity will on the route will im­prove by more than 10%.
