Network Rail warns of Brighton Main Line closures
Network Rail has reminded passengers that the Brighton Main Line will be closed between Three Bridges and Brighton and between Three Bridges and Lewes on weekends throughout November, in the latest part of the £67 million upgrade of the route.
The next closures take place on weekends beginning November 3, 10 and 24/25. The work involves renewing more track inside Clayton Tunnel, installation of new signals between Patcham and Preston Park, and replacement of electrical circuits between Three Bridges and Balcombe.
Work already undertaken includes renewal of 2.7 miles of conductor rail, 532 yards of track, replacement of 15 signal heads, and replacement of thousands of tonnes of ballast.
Further closures are due to take place on January 6, February 9/10, and between February 16 and February 24 (in the traditionally quieter school half-term week), followed by weekend closures beginning on March 2/23/30, April 6 and a final one-day closure on May 5. They follow a series of weekend closures in October.
Network Rail says that when completed, reliability will on the route will improve by more than 10%.
