£2 million repairs complete at Eskmeals Viaduct
A £2 million repair and upgrade of Eskmeals Viaduct was completed at the end of June, enabling Network Rail to reopen the Cumbrian Coast Line between Millom and Sellafield after an eight-day closure.
Wooden timbers and 600 metres of rail were renewed on the 18-span structure. The new track allows temporary speed restrictions to be removed.
The bridge dates from 1868 and retains its original wrought iron girders that were strengthened 100 years ago. Its red sandstone piers are also original.
Walkways and handrails were also upgraded during the work, to improve safety for maintenance staff.
