First new tram due for Metrolink

The first of 27 new Bombardier trams was due to be delivered to Manchester Metrolink as this issue of RAIL went to press.

The extra M5000s, ordered in March 2018 as part of the Congestion Deal, will be delivered every three to four weeks, with the first tram expected in traffic before Christmas.

The new trams will enable Metrolink to increase capacity by 15% once all have been delivered. Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham said initially the trams will help create more space for social distancing.
