Graffiti blight needs to be tackled

-

Good to see Secretary of State for Transport Grant Shapps backing the work of Network Rail in removing graffiti at London Bridge station ( RAIL 914). But has the message travelled to north of Watford?

Birmingham Snow Hill station has endured the spread of unsightly tags onto its viaduct (see my example, near the Livery Street entrance).

In the West Midlands, Network Rail has proved strangely resistant to any anti-graffiti strategy. Requests to remove daubings from lineside equipment go unanswered. And large-scale tagging on bridges, prime targets for this sort of criminal damage and often prominent sites in residential areas, are ignored.

With Birmingham hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022, the city is looking at its clean-up policies. Can anyone get Network Rail to engage? Or is it the usual case of London as top priority for cash and other resources?

Cllr Phil Davis, Birmingham
