Praise from a predecessor
There have been only three previous Commissioners of Transport for London since the post was created in 2001. 2001- 06 Bob Kiley 2006-15 Sir Peter Hendy 2015-20 Mike Brown 2020- Andy Byford
Hendy, now chairman of Network
Rail, held the post under both former mayors Ken Livingstone and Boris Johnson. He says of Andy Byford: “Andy is unadulterated good news. The right man in the job at the right time. He has energy, drive and commitment, and I am really pleased he is there.
“I read the financial settlement. Andy sent me a text saying he thought he could live with it.
“I don’t think it is generous. It will be tough to take another £160 million out of the organisation. Mike had already taken out a huge amount. But if Andy thinks he can do it, we should let him get on with it.”
