SICKNESS BEYOND REPAIR
Albi Elliot, now 47, was branded ‘despicably devious’ by a judge in June 2014.
Elliot’s daughter, Ashanti Elliot-smith, was diagnosed with progeria, a rare condition that makes her look much older than she is and means she’s unlikely to live past her mid-teens.
To brighten her short life, the Sussex British Motorcycle Owners Club donated £3,500 to help fulfil her dream of swimming with dolphins. Then, her heartless father stole it. Elliot had told the club that Ashanti’s mother, Phoebe Smith, his ex, was too ill to attend the cheque presentation. In fact, Ms Smith knew nothing about it.
When she found out, she shopped her ex to the police.
Defending his actions, Elliot told the jury at Chichester Crown Court that he was saving the money for Ashanti’s funeral, but it turned out he’d spent the cash on trips to Tesco. He was jailed for three years. Distraught, Ms Smith told a newspaper, ‘Knowing he stole from her killed me inside. To me, it’s the same as abuse, and it’s heartbreaking for Ashanti to know he has ruined her wish.’
