MORE CLASSIC MICKEY MANIA MOMENTS
In Glorious Technicolor
Mickey’s first animated short was a black-and-white production known as
Steamboat Willie, and that’s the first level of Mickey Mania.
However, Traveller’s Tales decided to modernise it a bit by gradually colourising the level, piece by piece, as you made progress. By the end, it was fully colourised.
Gurney Journey
The Mad Doctor’s stage requires Mickey to perform death-defying leaps between trolleys at high speed while avoiding spikes, circular saws and bottomless pits.
This sequence lasts under
30 seconds, but is rock hard – in fact, it’s so tough that the developers made it impossible to lose your last life here.
Tower Torment
Borrowing just a little from
Nebulus, this tower section in The Mad Doctor showed off some lovely technical trickery on the Mega Drive and made for a memorable bit of gameplay, as you leapt between collapsing platforms while avoiding barrels. This section returns later on too, with added pressure…
Fire Escape
We love a good bit of vertical platforming here at Retro
Gamer, and this section of
Mickey Mania fits the bill nicely. The tower’s guards are a menace, and the pressure is piled on even thicker as a beautifully animated inferno laps at Mickey’s heels. It’s a great late-game sequence that tests all of the skills you’ve developed.
