Cheryl lays down the law to struggling dad Liam
As 24-year-old Liam Payne admits he struggled to find his place in family life after baby Bear’s birth, Cheryl lays out her parenting ‘commandments’ – and she is strict!
Last week, Liam Payne candidly opened up about the feelings many men go through as new fathers – saying he struggled to find his place in the family after Cheryl gave birth to baby Bear.
‘A mother and child is the most beautiful thing to watch, but they’re the closest thing ever – and you’ll never be as close,’ he said. ‘A lot of dads feel put out in that sense. I didn’t really feel put out, but I was like, “Where’s my place?”’
He went on to admit he was ‘desperate to find out what
I was meant to do’ and that he settled on cooking for Cheryl, while she fed Bear, who turned one in March.
As Liam grapples with the stresses of fatherhood, Cheryl, 34, has completely taken charge – and has given her partner ‘commandments’ for Bear’s upbringing.
‘Despite Liam’s struggles, Cheryl has a very fixed idea on bringing up Bear together, so that he grows up in a stable environment,’ says a source close to the couple. ‘She doesn’t want him to go off the rails.’
Cheryl has laid down a strict set of rules for Liam to follow.
‘Liam joked they were the 10 commandments,’ says the insider.
Cheryl’s list of parenting dos and don’ts includes no dummies, no junk food, no fizzy drinks, no OTT gifts, no plastic bottles and restricted TV time. She is also determined to develop Bear’s academic and emotional intelligence, and has told Liam to work on his social skills, hand-eye coordination and to always read to him at bedtime.
She wants Bear to have good manners and says she will start potty training soon and have him dry by the age of two.
‘Cheryl wants to keep Bear grounded and normal, and for him to grow up with an open mind to today’s world,’ says the source. ‘She is also determined he will never see any tension between her and
Liam, saying there is to be no angry behaviour in front of their boy.’
Yet the former Girls Aloud singer’s rules have caused tension in the TweedyPayne household, because Liam is much more laid back.
‘Liam wants his little Bear to be a bit of a rule-breaker,’ says the source. ‘He doesn’t believe in wrapping a kid up in cotton wool. He is willing to meet Cheryl halfway, but says when he is in charge, it is “Daddy time”, and it won’t be all carrot sticks and counting.
‘He wants Bear to grow up well-balanced and not a spoilt brat, but he thinks Cheryl’s rules are over the top – he says the Beckhams’ kids seem lovely and they grew up with privilege.’
