Childhood sweethearts Wayne and Coleen Rooney, who first started dating aged 16, saw their lives change for ever in 2003. That was when Wayne was chosen for the England football team, a move that rocketed both of them to international fame at the tender age of 17.

That same year, Wayne got down on one knee in the unlikely setting of a local petrol station, asking Coleen to marry him while brandishing a £46,000 ring.

The pair married five years later in a lavish £5 million ceremony in Portofino, Italy, in front of 65 guests. Westlife, Coleen’s favourite band, performed at the four-day celebrations.

But 10 years of marriage to a multimillionaire footballer hasn’t all been plain sailing for Coleen, 32, with their relationship rocked by Wayne’s cheating and partying scandals.

Just last September, Wayne, also 32, was arrested for driving under the influence after a night out in Cheshire, caught with another woman sitting with him in the car.

The woman, Laura Simpson, 29, confessed that things might have gone further had they not been pulled over. It was yet another blow for the embattled Rooney marriage and, last November, a then-pregnant Coleen admitted she and Wayne had spent time apart, saying, ‘I thought my marriage was at an end.’

But, despite the odds, the pair have remained together and are proud parents to four boys – Kai, eight, Klay, five, Kit, two, and four-month-old Cass.

And, with their 10th anniversary this week, on June 12, Wayne sees the milestone as an opportunity to show Coleen how much she means to him.

‘It’s been one hell of a year for Wayne and Coleen. At times, their marriage has been almost at breaking point,’ reveals our source.

‘Wayne feels that, once they have celebrated 10 years together as man and wife, they can wipe the slate clean. He will be pulling out all the stops to spoil Coleen and prove that he really does love her.’

With the special anniversary being the first they’ve ever spent together – as footballer Wayne has been away for work for all the others – he is going all out to
