‘I have Ed Sheeran’s phone number!’
X Factor winner Sam Bailey talks texting A-list pals and supporting Katie Price through her rough patch
Soon after gracing our screens on The X Factor back in 2013, Sam Bailey was given a complete image overhaul. A once dowdy prison guard, she was completely transformed into a glamorous pop star for the live shows, and went on to win the series.
Dropping from a size 18 to a svelte size 10-12 after the show, Sam, 40, admits that, although some of the weight has crept back on, she’s embracing her body. Now, she has teamed up with plus-sized company Yours Clothing for its summer campaign.
Here, she tells us how she balances being a mum to her children – Brooke, 13, Tommy, nine, and Miley, three – and wife to husband Craig with her showbiz career…
YOU’VE JUST STARRED IN FAT FRIENDS THE MUSICAL WITH NATASHA HAMILTON. ARE YOU GOING TO HER WEDDING?
We’re invited to the reception, but I’m not sure when she’s getting married because she’s so busy. She’s an incredible actress, and she looks great. I’m very jealous because the whole of her bottom is probably the size of one of my bum cheeks!
DO YOU STILL
SPEAK TO MILEY’S GODMOTHER, SHARON OSBOURNE? I’m going to LA soon, and she’s supposed to be meeting up with us then. I do text her and send her pictures of Miley, though.
DO YOU HAVE ANY OTHER CELEBRITY FRIENDS?
I’ll send people a nice text if I’ve seen something in the news, but I tend to just leave people be. I’m really good friends with [footballer] Jamie and Becky Vardy, as well as Katie Price. She’s got her problems, but she’s a tough cookie. Katie can get through anything. She knows where I am if she needs me. I’ve also had Ed Sheeran’s number on my phone for about three years, but never rang it!
ARE YOU FEELING BODY CONFIDENT AT THE MOMENT?
I am feeling confident in my body, but I do eat a lot of c***. I’ve been touring with Fat Friends The Musical and, when you’re on the road, you eat out quite a lot. Now it’s finished, I’ve set myself a goal to be healthier, and start looking after myself a little bit better. But I’m happy with who I am.
WHAT’S YOUR END TARGET?
I don’t want to be stick-thin, but I want to tone up a bit. I like a challenge, so I’ve just agreed to do Ride London, which is a 100-mile bike ride. I don’t think any woman is completely happy with her body, and I have bits that I don’t like. But I don’t think about my weight and size, as long as I feel comfortable in what I’m wearing.
DID HAVING CHILDREN CHANGE YOUR BODY?
Yes, but I’ve accepted that I’m not going to have a washboard stomach like I used to have. I’m happy with that, because I have my three beautiful children. My stretch marks are a constant reminder that my body has carried three kids.
WHAT ARE YOUR CHILDREN LIKE NOW?
Miley’s my little firecracker, and Tommy’s a mummy’s boy – as well as a cuddle monster. Brooke is getting to the age where it’s embarrassing to have Sam Bailey as a mum – she only likes me when she wants something! She’s very independent, but we’ve got a special bond. She’s into fashion at the moment, so I showed her some of the clothes I wore in the campaign. She pointed out the things she liked, like the stripy jumpsuit. I’m getting style advice from my 13-yearold daughter!
