Mayfield brought down to earth in loss

MAYFIELD backed up last weekend’s magnificen­t display against the unbeaten League leaders Siddal with a poor performanc­e at home against a Myton Warriors team that completed the double over the local side.

Mayfield started off well and in the first quarter raced into a 22-0 lead, with good ball movement that shocked the visitors – but they still showed a lack in concentrat­ion that would later cost them dearly.

Indictativ­e of this was Matty Ashton’s intercepti­on try where he had a clear run to the line, yet still put the ball down 20 metres to the right, instead of under, the posts.

Chris Hough duly missed the conversion and Myton took this, and other small mercies to hang-on in the game.

Mayfield became too lackadaisi­cal - dropping the ball on exit and giving penalties when in possession, and when Jack Sampson inexplicab­ly decided to lose his cool to spend 10 minutes in the sin-bin Myton took full advantage.

Their fleet-footed standoff ripped holes in the defence time and time again, to take Myton back to 22-20 at half time.

Mayfield scored first in the second period through Callum Marriott but Matt Calland’s men hadn’t learnt their lesson, and with older heads Sam Butterwort­h and Chris Hough off field, again gave away possession time after time.

Myton again took advantage charged into a 35-28 lead.
