‘Sizzling’ DIY firm to bring 100 jobs
RAIN sodden Greater Manchester might not seem like the obvious place for an Aussie firm famed for its charity barbecues to set up shop.
But Bunnings Warehouse, an Australian institution renowned for its ‘sausage sizzles’, has announced plans to open in Rochdale.
About 100 jobs will be created when the DIY chain launches its first store in the North West in Sandbrook Park later this year.
And bosses have vowed to carry on the barbecue tradition, which sees profits going to local good causes, despite our notoriously wet weather.
It comes after the company bought DIY chain Homebase last year in a £340m deal and launched a major expansion programme. The firm is now recruiting for the roles.
Bunnings regional operations manager Josh Hyde said: “It is a great time to join the Bunnings Warehouse team in Rochdale.
“There are roles available across all areas, with hours to suit.
“We want to build a high-quality team so we can build strong business foundations for the future.”
The opening of the UK’s first Bunnings store in St Albans, Hertfordshire, earlier this year made headlines Down Under.
It was widely reported by the Australian media, with News Corp asking: “Do Poms love a sausage sizzle?”
The Rochdale opening is a major boost for Sandbrook Park following the closure of B&Q in early 2016.
About 75 jobs were lost when the store pulled out of Rochdale in a move described at the time by council leader Richard Farnell as a ‘bitter blow’ for the town.
But in November ambitious proposals to transform the retail park were announced with plans unveiled for a Travelodge hotel, Costa Coffee, KFC, and a trampoline centre.
Speaking when the plans were unveiled Coun Farnell said: “It was disappointing when B&Q announced it was pulling out of Rochdale, along with several other towns and cities.
“However, this is really good news for Sandbrook Park and yet another retail and leisure boost for the borough.
“The new Travelodge on the site is yet another indicator that our local economy is growing and going from strength to strength.
“The new stores will also create scores of new jobs. We are asking the developer to also fund a direct bus service from the town centre to Sandbrook.”
