Store’s plan for petrol garage is thrown out
PLAN for an Asda petrol garage has been blocked by the council as residents say it would have been ‘madness’.
The planning application proposed to build a the site in the car park of the current supermarket in Shaw.
But many factors including noise and light pollution, and logistics of tankers being able to access the site, meant it was rejected by Oldham Council.
Shaw councillor, Chris Gloster spoke at the meeting on Wednesday night and says he is happy about the decision.
He said: “I objected quite strongly about it and happy at the result. Not quite as happy as the residents of Shaw.
“The general feeling was that although another petrol station would be good for prices as there would be competition, the location many felt was madness.
During the meeting he highlighted the issue that to gain access to the site the 15m long tankers would have to cross on the offside carriageway on a blind bend.
He addressed the council and said: “How can we as a council approve an application that requires such a dangerous manoeuvre to service this site.”
He said there was also going to be issues for nearby residents.
He said: “It was also going to be around 25m away form terraced houses so there would have been a lot of noise and bright lights for those residents.
“There was also an access issue for tankers coming into the petrol station.
“Like I said we aren’t opposed to having another petrol station, but I think a resident put it best when they said the company bosses are trying to turn a small supermarket into a hypermarket and Shaw is not the right place to do it.”
A spokesman for Asda said: “We’re disappointed with the decision of Oldham Borough Council’s Planning Committee. The scheme represents a significant investment and would bring with it a more convenient and competitively priced place to fill up for local motorists. We await the formal confirmation from the council before a decision on next steps is made.”
