Air am­bu­lance on M62 as driver suf­fers ‘med­i­cal emer­gency’

AN air am­bu­lance was called to the M62 near Rochdale on Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon af­ter a driver suf­fered a ‘med­i­cal emer­gency’.

A driver crashed into the cen­tral reser­va­tion and then suf­fered a med­i­cal episode at the wheel, po­lice said.

The mo­tor­way was closed in both di­rec­tions for over an hour be­tween junc­tion 20 for Rochdale and junc­tion 21 for Mil­nrow dur­ing rush-hour to al­low the air am­bu­lance to land.

The male pa­tient was taken to hospi­tal to via air am­bu­lance in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion, a GMP spokes­woman said.

She said: “We were called at 4.10pm to junc­tion 20 of the M62 to re­ports that a ve­hi­cle had crashed into the cen­tral reser­va­tion. An air am­bu­lance was called and the mo­tor­way was closed at about 4.35pm. The pa­tient was taken to hospi­tal via air am­bu­lance in a se­ri­ous con­di­tion.”

The road was re­opened at about 5.20pm. Driv­ers were stuck in stand­still traf­fic stretch­ing be­tween junc­tion 2 of the M61 for Bolton all the way to junc­tion 23 of the M62 for Hud­der­s­field fol­low­ing the in­ci­dent.
