‘I was raped by Cyril Smith’ says ex-school pupil
AFORMER Knowl View pupil has told how he was raped by Cyril Smith at the school.
The man said he first attended the ‘horrible’ residential boys school in Rochdale, in the 1980s when aged 12 or 13.
Giving evidence to the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse the man, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, described Knowl View as ‘worse than a prison’.
He said pupils were mainly ‘left to their own devices’ at night.
One night he said a member of staff ‘pulled him out of bed’ and ‘frogmarched’ him to a flat, possibly a staff accommodation area, where 29 stone Smith was sitting on the bed.
He said Smith, a governor at the school, made him take off his pyjamas and performed a sex act on him before raping him.
“He forced me to lie facedown on the bed,” the man said.
“I did as instructed. I had no clothes on. He climbed on top of me. He was enormous and I felt I was being crushed.”
Earlier he told the inquiry about his first encounter with Smith.
He said one night he woke up to see a ‘very big, fat man’ sitting on his bed.
The man then sexually assaulted him.
Terrified, he spent the rest of the night sleeping under a fellow pupil’s bed and the following morning said he was ‘too scared’ to tell staff what had happened
Shortly afterwards he saw the same man in the school and a friend told him it was ‘Cyril Smith, the MP for Rochdale’.
On another occasion the man said Smith again performed a sex act on him and when he refused to do the same to Smith he was ‘given 20 cigarettes and thrown out of the room’.
He also recalled another incident where he was raped by an unknown man while ‘high on cans of ale and cans of gas’ as Smith sat on the side of the bed laughing.
The witness said he ‘blocked out’ the attacks, but in 2012 reported one of the incidents to the police.
Two years later, after seeing a counsellor, he went back to the police.
The man also discussed the physical abuse which took place at the Bamford school, which closed in the mid-90s.
He said pupils who were naughty during the night were made to stand in the gym naked by teaching staff.
When asked what ‘level of naughtiness’ led to such a punishment he replied ●●Former Rochdale MP Cyril Smith is alleged to have sexually abused young boys at Knowl View School and Cambridge House hostel ‘talking’.
Smith served as Rochdale MP from 1972 to 1992, and died aged 82 in 2010.
The national inquiry is examining how he, and others, were able to allegedly prey on young boys at Knowl View and Cambridge House hostel, which was also in Rochdale.
The London hearings are expected to last another seven days.
