Coun­cil leader should go says in­quiry lawyer

Abuse scandal vic­tims claim Richard Far­nell ‘isn’t fit to be town hall’s leader’ as demo staged at coun­cil of­fices

DEMON­STRA­TORS out­side Rochdale’s coun­cil of­fices de­manded town hall leader Richard Far­nell re­sign or be sacked in the wake of his ev­i­dence to the na­tional child abuse in­quiry.

They stood out­side Num­ber One River­side shout­ing ‘Far­nell Out’ and wav­ing plac­ards.

Their protest came af­ter Coun Far­nell - who was also leader when al­le­ga­tions of child abuse at a coun­cil-run school sur­faced in the early 1990s - was told at the In­de­pen­dent In­quiry into Child Sex­ual Abuse by a lawyer rep­re­sent­ing vic­tims that he should stand down af­ter claim­ing he knew noth­ing about the re­ports un­til the last few years.
