Mosque is set to expand

PLANS to expand a mosque have been approved by Rossendale council’s development control committee.

Developer Mr Haruk Miah applied to change the use of the upper floors of Shah Jalal Masjid in Rawtenstall - housed in the former council offices and law courts on Grange Street.

The new space will be used for teaching children and as a place for the community to hold meetings. Residents sent in five objections - all relating to parking provision.

Local resident Michael Pickup spoke against the application at the meeting.

He said: “When worshippers are visiting the mosque, the area is awash with vehicles.”

However, committee members unanimously voted in favour of the proposals, which included a specific travel plan.

Speaking outside the meeting, Ms Nixie Edwards, of planning agents Hussain Designs, said the building is at its busiest on Friday evenings, when between 50 and 60 worshippers attend.

Mr Miah has separately applied to redevelop the mosque’s former site on Longholme Road into offices.
