Bus station opening delayed until 2019
THE new Rawtenstall bus station will NOT be finished this year, regeneration bosses have admitted - as a dispute with Royal Mail over roads access rumbles on.
Rossendale council confirmed the £3.5m bus station will not be ready until ‘early 2019’.
Negotiations with Royal Mail over a ‘Stopping Up Order’ - which would close roads around its Kay Street sorting office - have not yet produced an agreement. Last November we reported that the dispute could cause delays. However, council leader Alyson Barnes insists the overall £5.4m Spinning Point project remains on track for completion in 2020, while the renovated old town hall is due to be completed by July ahead of handover to Together Housing.
In a statement, Coun Barnes said: “Whilst there have been some delays to the new bus station due to the stopping up negotiations, we are confident that construction will start very soon and that the overall project timescales will still be met. Some slippage on individual elements is not uncommon on projects of this scale.
“The important thing is how we deal with that slippage to ensure that the wider project is completed on time and to the highest standard.”
The council hopes to announce the first businesses to join Spinning Point shortly and are ‘extremely pleased’ with several expressions of interest. A car parking consultation will follow once they have a clearer idea of whether there will be a hotel or apartments as part of the development.
