Lions should broaden their horizons

Rugby World - - The Fans’ View - Steve Bold, Bristol

One year away from a hugely anticipated Lions tour to New Zealand, I think it’s time the Lions considered moving away from just touring the original SANZAR nations. With the strength of Argentinian rugby growing every year, how about ending a tour of the Americas with three Tests in South America? They could first play the USA and Canada, and perhaps give a boost to the new pro league in North America.

And what about a tour of France? Imagine midweek games against Clermont, Toulon and Toulouse. Packed stadiums for those games would create an amazing atmosphere. A France v Lions Test in Marseille would be a huge spectacle.

The Lions is a special and unique concept in any sport across the world. Just think what opening it up to more places could achieve and it would also allow the amazing Lions supporters to grace other parts of the globe.

The main issue here is whether other nations can provide strong enough provincial fixtures. France could but it would be a logistical nightmare because of the length of their domestic season. What do other readers think?
